INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS TRIP
Moldova - A team of church members and interested professionals travel to Eastern Europe to do a week of practical mission work among the people of Moldova. Moldova is a tiny country sandwiched between Romania and the Ukraine and is the poorest country in Eastern Europe . It was part of the former Soviet Union but is now an independent country struggling to survive. Work is coordinated through the Southern Baptist International Missions Board. The team conducts dental/medical clinics, offers Christian counseling, conducts day camps for children and youth, does personal soul winning with waiting patients, and conducts worship services in the host church. The cost per team member is approximately $2,100. The church underwrites the cost for dental supplies, medications that are distributed free of charge, and day camp supplies. There is need for dentists, dental assistants, doctors, nurses, day camp workers, Christian counselors, an evangelist and musicians who will volunteer to serve on the team. The minister of music and education coordinates the trip. Interested people should contact Phil Newcom at 729-4863 or email from this site.
LOCAL MISSIONS PROJECTS
Community Christmas Dinner - The entire community is invited to eat Christmas dinner in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church. Approximately 300 people take advantage of this opportunity every year. The target is to serve a traditional dinner for those who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone. Teresa Whelan coordinates this event every year. Church members prepare covered dishes of food and serve the meal from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 P.M. on Christmas Day.
Independence Day Celebration - Our church is on the parade route for the community Independence Day parade. The community lines up along MacArthur Street to view the parade an hour or so before the parade begins. Our church lawn, steps to our facilities, and our parking lots are always full. As a service to those who are waiting for the parade to begin, our Sunday School classes start serving food and giving away gifts free of charge to those who are waiting on our church property. We give away, watermelon, lemonade, hot dogs, popsicles, homemade baked goods, snow cones, popcorn, fountain drinks, helium balloons, and face painting for the kids. Approximately 600 people were served at the 2007 parade. Our Sunday School classes purchase the food and volunteer their services to serve the food to the crowds of people.
